Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Matt Doherty comments on Aston Villa’s form

Wolverhampton Wanderers are currently 13 points ahead of Aston Villa.

Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Matt Doherty has told the Express and Star that he believes the fact that Aston Villa are still so far behind them shows just how well they have played this season.

Villa won seven league matches in a row, but have been unable to move within touching distance of Wolves.

Villa lost 1-0 to Fulham at the weekend, while Wolves were only able to manage a 1-1 draw with Preston North End.

Wolves are still 13 points clear of Villa, and Doherty feels that their near neighbour’s failure to catch them, shows what a good position they are in.

“We’ll take a draw, Villa lost which helps,” Doherty said.

“Villa won seven in a row and they’re still 13 points behind us which just goes to show the work that we’ve done in the earlier part of the season, which might allow us to have a draw here or there and not sweat too much over it. It’s a nice position to be in.”

Wolves’ nearest rivals are actually Cardiff City now, rather than Villa.

Cardiff are still 11 points behind Nuno’s side, and only a disastrous run of form would see Wolves miss out on promotion now.

Wolves will be looking to get back to winning ways tomorrow evening, when they take on Norwich City.

The Villans, meanwhile, are in action tonight – when they take on Preston at Villa Park.
