Poland goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has been a solid goalkeeper at Juventus, but the former Arsenal man won’t be happy with his own goal this evening.
The Poles are taking on Slovakia in their first Euro 2020 group stage game, and trail 1-0 at half time, at the time of writing.
Robert Mak’s effort opened the scoring for Slovakia, cutting inside from the left flank before firing a shot against the post – but it bounced off Szczesny and back in.
Szczesny’s historic own goal
You would love to give the goal to Mak for his work down the flank, but UEFA have given the goal as a Szczesny own goal.
Neither Szczesny nor Mak will be happy with that ruling, and it means the Szczesny has now become the first ever goalkeeper to score an own goal at the European Championships.
No matter what Szczesny does in the rest of the tournament, his own goal will define his summer, and attach his name to an unwanted record forever.

Szczesny had rebuild himself after Arsenal exit
Arsenal fans maybe saw Szczesny as a comedic figure at times, mixing the sublime with the ridiculous during his time with the Gunners.
That tag had been eradicated with some fine displays for Juventus, but some will be back to mocking him this evening.
In truth, he was just unlucky; Mak’s shot hit the post and bounced back off Szczesny and in, but the own goal record will remain.
