As reported by the Scottish Sun, Rangers manager Pedro Caixinha demoted veteran striker Kenny Miller to the Gers’ development side for their recent clash with Brentford, after an alleged exchange following the Old Firm defeat to Celtic.

But given the makeup of Rangers’ current squad, is the decision to ostracize a seasoned Scottish professional the right thing to do?

After all, the majority of Rangers’ summer signings came from abroad with no experience of Scottish football, and while the likes of Ryan Jack and Graham Dorrans have excelled in the centre of the park, removing the club’s most experienced player seems bizarre to say the least.

Miller may have had something to say after Rangers’ defeat to Celtic, but what is wrong with that? The 37-year-old knows better than most what it takes to win an Old Firm derby and his influence on those who do not should not be understated.

Rangers are in a transitional period and Miller should be vital to that, passing down his words of wisdom and ensuring the youngsters and new additions understand what it means to play for a Gers side desperate to get back to their best.

The problem with demoting a player of Miller’s experience and importance is that Rangers have lost one of the men willing to run through brick walls for them.

Temporary or otherwise, the decision is a risky one, especially so soon into a campaign when this new-look Ranger squad are still getting to know each other both on and off the pitch.
