West Ham United continue to chase the midfielder but the Ligue 1 champions are now interested in a deal.

Sporting CP midfielder William Carvalho from Portugal during the Friendly match between Sporting CP and AS Monaco at Estadio Jose Alvalade on July 22, 2017 in Lisbon, Portugal.

According to French newspaper L’Equipe, AS Monaco want William Carvalho to replace Fabinho if the latter moves to Paris Saint-Germain this summer.

That could be bad news for West Ham United who, as reported by the Mirror, have made an initial £30million bid (with £5million in add-ons) for the Portugueuse international.

The Mirror report claims William’s current club Sporting Lisbon are now holding out for £40million for the 25-year-old; a decision that has angered West Ham.

However L’Equipe is now suggesting that should Fabinho leave the Ligue 1 champions, they are ready to pay an initial £27.8million rising to £33.4million to seal William’s signature.

That is less than the Hammers have agreed if already criteria is met and it remains to be seen how this one will play out before Thursday’s deadline.

One thing is for sure: Monaco can offer William both Champions League football and a title tilt; something West Ham cannot.

The holding midfielder would be a superb addition to Slaven Bilic’s side, immediately shoring up his defence by offering an additional level of protection, while also allowing the Hammers’ attacking players to focus on what they do best.

There is still time to get a deal over the line, but with each passing day West Ham fans will be getting more nervous.
