Newcastle United wanted to bring in Lucas Vazquez from Real Madrid over the summer.
Newcastle United roared back from 2-0 down at West Bromwich Albion on Tuesday night to claim a 2-2 draw at The Hawthorns – but manager Rafael Benitez won’t be too happy just yet.
The Magpies snapped a run of four straight defeats with that draw, but it’s still just one point in the last five games, and only three goals scored in that run.
Manager Benitez may need new additions in January to boost his attack, and another winger could be targeted to challenge with the likes of Matt Ritchie, Christian Atsu and Jacob Murphy.
Over the summer, Spanish newspaper AS reported that Newcastle were hoping to land Real Madrid winger Lucas Vazquez, but no deal materialised as the wide man stayed at the Santiago Bernabeu.
However, the 26-year-old – who has come up through the ranks with Real – has started just five games this season, and with hopes of making it into Spain’s World Cup squad next summer, he may at least consider a January move.
Zinedine Zidane’s diamond formation completely cuts wingers out of the equation, meaning Vazquez’s role may be diminished for some time, and even if Zidane does revert to a system with wingers, the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale are likely to feature, or even Marco Asensio and Isco if played out of position.
Vazquez is now at an age where he needs to play regularly, and heading to Newcastle – under his former Real boss Benitez – would give him a huge platform to not only play regularly, but be the star of the Magpies side.
Benitez would need the club’s planned takeover to go through in order to mount any considerable transfer bid for Vazquez, but a loan move could make sense for all parties, and the Newcastle boss should keep the Spanish winger on his wish list ahead of January.
