Leeds United were reportedly looking at a move for Preston striker Jordan Hugill in the summer (Yorkshire Post) as a replacement for New Zealand international Chris Wood, but with the 25-year-old target man having scored just five goals in 18 appearances this term, did Leeds dodge a bullet by not following up their interest?
Preston fought off plenty of interest in the summer to keep hold of their talisman, turning down the striker’s transfer request to keep him at the club.
However, Hugill hasn’t produced the sort of returns expected this season, hitting the back of the net just five times and registering one assist in his 18 appearances so far this campaign.
Teammates Tom Barkhuizen (four goals, five assists) and Sean Maguire (three goals, four assists) have both contributed more goals than the Englishman.
With Preston turning down £8 million bids from Wolves and Reading in the summer (Sky Sports), it’s fair to say Leeds dodged a bullet on Hugill, although Jay-Roy Grot, signed in his place, doesn’t seem to be the answer.
With summer signings Caleb Ekuban, Jay-Roy Grot and Pawel Cibicki all yet to open their league accounts for The Whites, it’s clear to see Leeds need to bolster their attack in January, although choosing not to go in for Hugill was certainly the right call.
