Victor Wanyama insists he is staying at Tottenham Hotspur so with Mousa Dembele reportedly leaving it is time for the midfielder to step up.
It is looking increasingly likely that Mousa Dembele will leave Tottenham Hotspur this summer, with the Mirror reporting the midfielder is available for transfer.
Dembele has spent six seasons with Spurs but turns 31 in July and there are concerns that the Belgian is no longer sharp enough to fit into Mauricio Pochettino’s style of play.
One player who won’t on their way out of the club, however, is Victor Wanyama, who despite the Evening Standard reporting has attracted interest from Liverpool and Manchester United, insists he’s staying put.
“I don’t respond to rumours and all those are rumours to me, I still have a contract with Spurs and that is what I want to see through,” Wanyama told Goal.
“I did not have a good season with the team because of injury and my aim now is to work hard during this break and return for next season even stronger and help them perform even better.
“I am happy at Tottenham and I am committed to the team. I am not aware of anything and I am very fine and happy where I am.”
Time to step up
Wanyama stressed that a knee injury that limited the 26-year-old to just 18 Premier League appearances in 2017/18 was extremely frustrating.
The Kenya international has now spent two years with Tottenham himself, but with Dembele seemingly departing this is the chance for the former Celtic and Southampton star to truly step up.
A solid enough defensive midfielder, Wanyama now needs to prove that he can be a key part of the project that Pochettino is building in North London and help the team to consistently challenge for silverware.
