Should Leeds United make a move for their former striker with their promotion rivals among the favourites to sign him for free?
According to bookmakers Sky Bet, Brighton & Hove Albion are one of the favourites to sign striker Robbie Keane this month, with the former Republic of Ireland international a free agent after leaving LA Galaxy.
At 36, he is most certainly in the twilight of his career, however he would offer the Seagulls an extra goal threat just when they need it the most, with Newcastle United just a point ahead of them and Leeds United breathing down their necks.
However, for that very reason the third-placed Whites would be wise to make a move of their own, strengthening their striking options while ensuring a direct rival for automatic promotion does not.
Keane is a former Leeds player who had a somewhat hit-and-miss time at Elland Road, initially excelling during a loan stint before struggling for consistency during his permanent tenure.
That said what Leeds need right now is a back-up striker rather than a first-choice forward, and at his age that is surely the best Keane can hope for.
He has the experience to help guide Leeds back to the big time, and if he feels a sense of unfinished business at Elland Road what better way to finish his career than by returning to England and helping the Whites finally return to the top flight after far too long away.
If Leeds can convince Keane to drop his wage demands – and let’s face it, it is not as if he is short of a bob or two – he could be the surprise difference-maker in the unlikely battle between Brighton and Garry Monk’s resurgent side.
