Paul Merson has claimed that a managerial change at Leeds United ‘had to be made’ because they were on a ‘slippery slope’ under Marcelo Bielsa, as he told Sportskeeda.
The former double-winner added that Leeds now have a chance of getting something at Leicester City with Jesse Marsch, after previously thinking the Foxes were going to ‘easily’ win when Bielsa was in charge.
The Whites have been on a barren run of results and performances that has seen them capitulate within the first half an hour of games.
So much so that even the most popular man in Yorkshire had to be shown the exit door, with former RB Leipzig and Salzburg man, Marsch, now tasked with guiding the club to safety.
Nonetheless, Merson is now changing his tune about Leeds, after Bielsa’s sacking and Marsch’s arrival.
“This is a different game of football with Jesse Marsch taking over the reins at Elland Road,” said Merson.
“A week or two ago, I’d have said Leicester City would win quite easily, but now, Leeds United have a chance.
“It’ll be interesting to see how the new manager conveys his ideas in a short span of time because Leeds need points on the board immediately.
“With all due respect to Marcelo Bielsa, the managerial change had to be made as they were on a bit of a slippery slope in the Premier League.”
It took Leeds nearly two decades to return to the Premier League and it would be disastrous if they went back down now.
In truth, the Premier League needs a club the size of Leeds strutting their stuff in it because it is a greater spectacle with them competing in it.
Somehow, they seem to find to have rivals everywhere they turn, not forgetting that Elland Road is one of the most iconic and historic grounds in English football.
Whilst Leeds will still be entertaining under Marsch, it’s not going to be at the level of what Bielsa used to provide on a weekly basis.
