West Ham United defender James Collins is attracting attention from Premier League rivals Brighton and Hove Albion.

According to a recent report from The Sun, Brighton are plotting a £2 million bid for West Ham defender James Collins as Chris Hughton looks to add to his defensive options during the January transfer window.

With the 34-year-old out of contract at the end of the season at the London Stadium, according to The Sun, it may be tempting for the Hammers hierarchy to consider cashing in on the player this month rather than potentially letting him leave in the summer for nothing.

But unless the Irons are £2 million away from having the funds to land a key target for this window, surely they should reject any bid that comes in from their Premier League rivals.

Collins may now be in the twilight of his career, but he is still contributing to David Moyes’ side, and has largely been impressive when he has played this season.

A recent surge up the table may leave West Ham 11th, but they are certainly not out of the woods yet regarding a potential relegation scrap so selling Collins – to a bottom-half rival at that – makes little sense.

The Welshman brings a huge amount of experience that can help some of the talented youngsters in the squad, and as he is still making an impact on the pitch, the smart move would surely be to snub Brighton’s interest.

If the Seagulls were offering a much greater amount, then selling would be understandable. But given how insignificant £2 million seems to be in today’s game coupled with how important staying in the top flight is and the rewards that come from that, it surely makes a lot more sense to ignore all offers and address his future at the end of the campaign.
