Adam Le Fondre has confirmed that he is set to leave Sydney FC, after reports suggested that Sunderland wanted to bring the Football League goal-machine back to England, while speaking to The World Game.

The Black Cats might have added Danny Graham and Aiden O’Brien to Phil Parkinson’s squad in the off-season but, clearly, putting the ball in the back of the net remains a real issue.

A 5-3 victory over Carlisle United in the Football League trophy on Tuesday night was pretty much the definition of an anomaly.

Sunderland, after all, have scored just four times in their three third-tier games in 2020/21, drawing a blank against Charlton Athletic last weekend.

Le Fondre, then, could be the sort of transformative signing who immediately turns the Wearside giants from promotion-chasing nearly men into genuine title favourites.

The 33-year-old ‘fox in the box’ has scored at a prolific rate in the lower leagues before, and he even secured promotion alongside Parkinson at Bolton Wanderers in 2016/17.

After the Mail reported in July that Sunderland were interested, Le Fondre has confirmed his imminent departure from Sydney FC.

“I’ve had two fantastic years here at Sydney FC and have cherished every moment of my life in Australia,” the former Reading, Rotherham United and Cardiff City ace explains.

“Adam has had an unbelievable couple of years with the club and has had a huge influence on our squad,” adds coach Steve Corica.

“He has barely missed a minute of football since arriving and has shown true commitment in every second on the pitch; his performances have been second to none.

“To stand in his way would not be just reward for the service he has given us, and we wish him the best.”

Le Fondre scored 23 and 18 goals in his two seasons Down Under.
