Former West Ham United defender Nigel Winterburn has graded his former side’s performance with a D on Sky Sports official website, after they lost 2-0 to Watford.

Goals from midfielder Will Hughes and Brazilian summer signing Richarlison succumbed the Hammers to a disappointing loss in David Moyes’ first game in charge, despite having a number of chances to get on the scoresheet.

Had it not been for some miraculous goalkeeping from Heurelho Gomes, the Hammers would have found the back of the net but instead the former Tottenham stopper had other ideas; superbly stopping efforts from Marko Arnautovic and Cheikhou Kouyate.

However, Winterburn was not impressed with the Hammers display, as they remain in the bottom three of the Premier League for another week.

The 53-year-old, who spent three years at West Ham during the end of his career between 2000 and 2003, stated that the only way is up for Moyes’ men with the former Everton boss already questioning his players.

“David Moyes summed it up for West Ham after their defeat to Watford,” Winterburn said. “How can you go any better than D when he is already questioning his players after the first game?”

The Hammers now have just two league wins from 12 top-tier outings, and are in danger of being drawn into a relegation battle if they remain in the bottom three past Christmas.

Moyes will be looking to change his side’s fortunes against 2015-16 Premier League champions Leicester City on Friday night, as he takes his side back to the London Stadium for his second game in charge.
