The West Ham United star is nearing a return to fitness.

Winston Reid has told West Ham United’s official website that he expects to be back in full training within a week.

The 29-year-old defender has been out of action since late April and missed the Hammers’ last two Premier League games of the season with a shin problem.

With West Ham scheduled to kick off the new season on August 13 with a trip to Manchester United, Slaven Bilic will need his best options available to him.

And the New Zealand international has suggested he could be in the reckoning by revealing that he is closing in on a return to full fitness.

“Hopefully in the next week or so I should be back, which we were sort of aiming for,” he told the club’s official website.

“Generally, the rehab has been really good and the surgery has fixed the problem, which is the most important thing. I’ll be able to go out there and play pain-free, which is a blessing.

“It was just one of those things that you get every now and then. You get various knocks and bruises and you fix them and this one has been fixed now.”

Reid starting alongside Angelo Ogbonna at Old Trafford is the dream scenario for the Irons.

It will worry West Ham fans if the big Italian has to start alongside, say, Jose Fonte in their Premier League curtain raiser, the Portuguese proving himself something of a liability.
