The Hammers beat Palace at Selhurst Park but only after Christian Benteke missed a penalty and hit the woodwork.
West Ham United defender Winston Reid has admitted to BBC Sport that his side rode their luck to beat Crystal Palace on Saturday.
The Hammers went into the all-London clash at Selhurst Park desperately needing a positive result after winning just one of their first seven Premier League fixtures.
Manuel Lanzini gave them the lead in the first half, but they were given a massive let-off when Christian Benteke skied a penalty high and wide.
Benteke later went on to hit the woodwork and Aaron Cresswell was sent off for a second bookable offence, but the Hammers held out for a priceless victory as they look to finally build some momentum this season.
After the game, Reid admitted to BBC Sport that his side rode their luck, but insisted that the visitors earned the win through the fight and determination they showed.
The New Zealander said: “We needed it as results haven’t been the best of late, we had a bit of luck on our side. I thought we earned it and showed out there today we are a team all fighting for each other – this result will lift us.
“It was nice that the formation paid off, and I thought we dealt with them as best we could and got forward well as well. We looked 100% as a team and were working hard for each other. We stay humble and keep working hard.
“I thought [Aaron Cresswell] was a little bit harshly done by, but the referee has made a decision and we had to dig in, which we did, and got a fantastic result.”
West Ham fans will be hoping that the backs-to-the-wall victory proves to be a watershed moment in their season after such a torrid start.
The Hammers next face bottom-of-the-table Sunderland at home next weekend in what is a wonderful chance to make it back-to-back victories.
