Tottenham Hotspur is Ross Barkley’s best bet if Everton talent wants to go to the World Cup.

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Harry Winks was called up into the England squad this week, winning his first senior cap at the age of 21.

Winks has become the sixth England player to win a call up under Mauricio Pochettino’s guidance, another feather in the cap of the Spurs boss when it comes to developing talent.

His call up should offer further hint to Everton talent Ross Barkley that his best bet is to sign with Tottenham, whether that be in January or next summer.

Barkley’s contract is expiring and he is currently on the sidelines with a hamstring injury.

The Times report Barkley was interested in Spurs during the summer – prior to him rejecting a move to Chelsea, with The Telegraph reporting Tottenham valued the attacking midfielder at £28 million.

Under Ronald Koeman at Everton, Barkley’s England prospects went backwards.

He was selected for seven consecutive squads under Sam Allardyce and Gareth Southgate – and failed to play a single minute in any of them.

In short, he was there as a back-up, an afterthought, and then he lost his place altogether.

If Barkley wants to play at the World Cup, he needs a fresh start, and Tottenham is his best bet.

Not only will he get to work under Pochettino, but he will be able to play alongside England regulars Harry Kane and Dele Alli and demonstrate to Gareth Southgate that he can be a valuable player for the Three Lions.
