Speaking on the Seaman Says Podcast, Aaron Ramsdale has been discussing how goalkeepers are analysed and Illan Meslier.
Ramsdale is very much a part of the so-called ‘goalkeeper’s union’, and he’s been venting his frustrations about the scrutiny goalies come under when they’re on the wrong end of a bad scoreline.
The goalkeeper noted that when Arsenal headed to Elland Road earlier this season, Illan Meslier actually had a good game, making a string of brilliant saves, but, as ever, his saves were ignored due to the fact he’d conceded on a number of occasions.
Ramsdale says that Meslier’s lack of praise wound him up, stating that his saves should have been mentioned.

Ramsdale defended Meslier.
“When we played Leeds away, and Meslier made five or six saves in the first half, but they were 3-0 down. Nobody really mentioned the saves, they mentioned one goal that he might’ve done better for, but if you get 10 shots at you, you’re going to let one in, but that’s what people always talk about. That’s for another day, but that winds me up,” Ramsdale said.
He knows
Ramsdale knows better than anyone what it’s like to be a quality goalkeeper in a struggling team.
The Arsenal number one was relegated twice with both Sheffield United and Bournemouth before moving to the Emirates, and during that time he was conceding plenty while playing well.
That’s why many turned their noses up at Ramsdale when he arrived at Arsenal in the summer, but now that he’s playing behind a competent defence, you can see just how good he actually is.
Meslier is a fantastic goalkeeper, and while he’s conceded a lot of goals this season, that isn’t a true indicator of his quality.
