Ex-Tottenham defender Kevin Wimmer is being cast aside by Stoke City.
Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy may have a reputation as a tough negotiator, and many will describe him as frugal, but he sure gets some great deals.
Spurs will feel great about some the sales they’ve made under Levy’s reign, and the deal to offload Kevin Wimmer to Stoke City may be one of the best.
In 2015, Spurs raided German side Koln to sign Wimmer, paying just £4.3million to land the Austrian in a bargain move (The Guardian).
Wimmer was brought in as cover for Jan Vertonghen and then Toby Alderweireld, and actually impressed in 21 first-team games in his first season.
After just 10 appearances in his second season though, Wimmer’s future was unclear. When Spurs moved to bring in Davinson Sanchez and Juan Foyth, Wimmer was sold to Stoke City – and that’s where things have gone wrong.
Now 26, Wimmer has only played 19 games for Stoke. This past season, he was loaned out to Hannover back in the Bundesliga, but that deal is now over, and his future is unclear.
Sky Sports report that Wimmer has been told to stay at home rather than come to Stoke’s pre-season tour to the Netherlands, with Nathan Jones seemingly deeming him surplus to requirements.
Wimmer is a complete outcast at Stoke, just two years since they paid a whopping £18million to sign him (The Telegraph). Tottenham made a £14million profit on Wimmer after just 31 games, and with his career taking another downward turn, it’s fair to say that Levy getting so much money for him looks like an absolute masterstroke.
