‘Wily old fox’: Nicholas thinks Celtic should sign 34-year-old or England international

Celtic should make a move for Leicester City veteran Christian Fuchs in an attempt to solve their left-back problem, Hoops legend Charlie Nicholas has told the Daily Express (29 September, page 57).

While the Scottish Premiership champions had no choice but to shove the disgraced Boli Bolingoli out the door, finding a replacement before next week’s transfer deadline is proving to be easier said than done.

Charlton Athletic boss Lee Bowyer has all-but ruled out the departure of Alfie Doughty after Celtic had two bids rejected for the 21-year-old speed-machine (Glasgow Times).

Bristol City assist-machine Niclas Eliasson and Arhus’s Casper Hojer have also been linked as Neil Lennon and Nick Hammond look to hedge their bets with just five days remaining until the window slams shut.

But Nicholas has an idea of his own. One that revolves around offering a 34-year-old Premier League winner a fresh start on the green half of Glasgow.

“If I was Celtic I would be going to (former manager) Brendan Rodgers and looking for a favour. They are crying out for a left-back and I would go and ask about Christian Fuchs at Leicester City,” says Nicholas, who believes the Hoops were ‘mad’ to let the versatile Jonny Hayes return to Aberdeen.

“The Austrian is a wily old fox that would give the Celtic defence some bite and is exactly what they need both domestically and for the Europa League.

“I know he is 34 but he is experienced, strong and an attacking left-back. He is sound defensively and good going forward. Fuchs would come with a real top level pedigree and let’s not forget he has also won the Premier League at Leicester.

“Rodgers is playing a back four and I think Fuchs is much better in a back five and Celtic’s style, just now, would suit him perfectly.”

Nicholas believes that, if Fuchs is unavailable, Celtic should chance their arm at Tottenham Hotspur’s Danny Rose.

The England international is not a part of Jose Mourinho’s plans, especially after the arrival of Sergio Reguilon from Real Madrid. And, after failing to win a single trophy during 13 years at Spurs, Rose may be temped to get his hands on silverware in Scotland.
