Young Rangers defender Aidan Wilson has signed a contract extension to keep him at Ibrox until 2020.
Rangers teenager Aidan Wilson has put pen to paper on a new contract extension at Ibrox that will see him remain at Auchenhowie until the summer of 2020, as confirmed by the club’s website.
Wilson, 18, previously had a contract with the Gers until the end of the 2018-19 campaign, but interim boss Graeme Murty saw fit to hand the defender a year’s extension.
Making two appearances under former manager Pedro Caixinha last season against Aberdeen and St. Johnstone, Wilson is highly rated at Ibrox and is looking to break into the first team against this time around.
“I was delighted to sign,” Wilson said. “I have learnt from training with the first-team and all I can do is keep going round to train with them, working hard, learning things from the players and then hopefully my chance will come.”
Wilson’s extension means Rangers now have an abundance of centre-backs to choose from, with Bruno Alves, Fabio Cardoso, Danny Wilson and Ross McCrorie all vying for a first-team slot.
However, 21-year-old David Bates is yet to feature in the league for the Gers this season and with teenage ace Wilson signing a new contract, it is likely to push the youngster above Bates in the pecking order.
Rangers number 24 has made just two appearances this season, struggling in Rangers’ Europa League qualifiers against minnows Progres Niedercorn.
Bates’ contract is set to expire in May, and is unlikely to be given any game time to prove his worth with competition aplenty. A move elsewhere in January, whether on loan or permanently, seems to be the only other option for Bates.
