Will West Ham be kicking themselves they didn’t try and sign Jack Wilshere from Arsenal over the summer?

Jack Wilshere scored his first Premier League goal of the season as Arsenal twice came from behind to draw 2-2 with Chelsea.

Having initially been marginalised by manager Arsene Wenger this term and played in the Carabao Cup and Europa League, Wilshere has now started the Gunners’ last six league matches.

The midfielder has been in fine form during that time, although admitted after the tie with the Blues that there is still no sign of a new contract – with his current deal at the Emirates Stadium expiring this summer.

“No progress there. I want to be going to (the World Cup in) Russia but now is not the time to be thinking about that,” Wilshere told Sky Sports.

Yet the more impressive performances the 26-year-old puts in for the North Londoners the harder it is going to be for West Ham United – who as football.london reports have a long held interest in the England international – to sign him.

Last summer Wilshere’s stock was as low as it had been since he first broke into the first team under Wenger, having been loaned out to Bournemouth and failing to impress.

At that point, with the Englishman about to enter the last year of his contract and clearly not in his boss’ plans there would have been a good chance the Hammers could have picked him up for a reasonable fee.

Now six months on and with Wilshere having forced himself back into contention under Wenger that no longer seems so likely; so will West Ham be kicking themselves they didn’t do more to sign him when they had the chance?
