Willy Sagnol will reportedly apply for the manager’s job at Scottish Premiership champions Celtic.
What would Willy Sagnol bring to Celtic?
The Scottish Sun broke the news last week that the former France and Bayern Munich defender will apply for The Hoops job this summer with his representative Alex McDonald confirming that he is ‘definitely interested’ in taking over at the Scottish Premiership champions.
But considering that Sagnol has only ever had one managerial role, a two year spell at Bordeaux between 2014 and 2016, the sample size is small and he remains something of a mystery for Celtic fans still reeling from Brendan Rodgers’ sudden and unexpected departure.
Though if you listened to the 42-year-old’s impassioned rant about Paris Saint-Germain over the weekend, then you’d have been left in no doubt about Sagnol’s approach to the game.
“The impression that PSG players give? Not everyone cares, there is no captain in the ship!” Sagnol told RMC Radio (20 April) reported by FootRadio. “Everyone does what he wants!
“Even if they win against Monaco and Rennes, it will not take anything away from PSG’s recurrent problems. And it will continue as long as there is no deep analysis of the weaknesses of this PSG side.”
So what can we learn from this? Well, Sagnol is clearly an impassioned individual who knows his own mind.
The 2006 World Cup finalist also appears to value the collective over the individual, lambasting a PSG team who, while hugely successful in France, frequently look like a team of strangers rather than a well-drilled side pulling in the same direction.
If Celtic take the plunge and hand Sagnol his first job in Britain, they may well have a manager who refuses to accept passengers or anyone not giving 110 per cent. And that’s not a bad platform for success.
