The Newcastle United man did not cover himself in glory for Scotland.
Speaking to BBC Sport, Willie Miller has criticised Newcastle United and Scotland defender Grant Hanley.
Gordon Strachan’s side drew 1-1 at home to Lithuania at the weekend in what was a poor result for their hopes of qualifying for the World Cup in Russia.
The Newcastle centre-back was partially culpable for the visitors’ opener when he allowed Fedor Cernych to get past him en route to finishing clinically.
The 24-year-old managed to atone for his part in the goal by getting a headed assist for James McArthur’s late equaliser.
But Miller, who earned 65 Scotland caps during a 14-year international career, does not rate the Magpies man defensively, but questioned whether Strachan had anybody better.
He told BBC Sport: “Does he get an extra point for the flick-on for the goal? Probably. He doesn’t rate at all highly for his defensive qualities though. Hanley and Martin worry you, but is there better out there? That’s the question.”
It would appear that Hanley – a £6 million signing by Newcastle in the summer, according to The Mail – is not hugely rated by United boss Rafael Benitez either.
He has started just one Championship game for the North-East giants since his arrival from Blackburn Rovers. For the most part, he has been an unused substitute.
That being said, £6 million is a relatively big investment in the Championship, so Benitez surely has a long-term plan for the Scot.
