Ashley Williams has spoke of his delight on Everton’s official website at the rock-solid form of versatile defender Mason Holgate as the two stars continue to combine.

The 33-year-old man mountain has been partnered with Holgate for the last three Premier League matches, which has seen Sam Allardyce’s side concede just one goal during Sunday’s 1-1 draw against Merseyside rivals Liverpool.

Holgate and Williams have complimented eachother well despite both players being criticised for their performances earlier in the season, and now they are expected to start for fourth consecutive league match against Newcastle.

Speaking to the Toffees’ website, Williams stated his respect for ex-Barnsley defender Holgate and even remarked that the 21-year-old is one of his “best friends” at Goodison Park.

“It was a very good performance from Mason,” said Williams. “I am enjoying playing with him, we have a good understanding at the minute.

“The work we are doing on the training ground seems to be paying off. For him to play like he did on Sunday, with the circumstances of a derby and under so much pressure… I thought he was a credit to himself.

“I am pleased for him because he is a great lad and such a good player – and he is one of my best friends here.”

Everton will be in confident mood on Wednesday evening as they face Newcastle United at St. James’ Park, after three wins and Sunday’s draw in their last four outings.

Their form is completely contrasted by the Toon’s dismal run that has seen Rafa Benitez’s men lose six times out of their last seven games.

The Toffees will be buoyed by their recent form against Newcastle, which has seen them win six of their last seven games including a 3-0 win in February 2016 last time out.
