Tottenham Hotspur felt they had themselves a top young talent in the form of Nigerian defender William Troost-Ekong when they brought him in from a spell at Fulham.
They had plenty of reason to, as the 23-year-old has revealed it was not only Spurs that tried to sign him up – Liverpool and Manchester City were also keen.
Speaking to ELF Voetbal this week the Nigerian international, currently with Belgian side Gent, spoke about the interest from Liverpool and City. He stated that he looked at Liverpool but had already chosen Spurs by the time that Manchester City came knocking:
“At Liverpool, I went to see yet, but when City did I had already gone. I had in fact been selected for Tottenham Hotspur. The club did everything to attract me.
“They flew my mother to London to talk and even wanted to fly to Nigeria to look for my father. When I was there pretty quickly.”

Troost-Ekong never made it at Spurs, and may have been better heading to Liverpool or City.
After not featuring for Spurs he left for FC Groningen before heading to Belgium. He spent last season on loan at Norwegian side Haugesund and was one of the star players in Norway.
Now a regular in the Nigerian national set-up and clearly a top talent, time will tell if Liverpool, City and Spurs regret his career path.
