Former Tottenham Hotspur captain William Gallas did not hold back in his criticism of Andre Villas-Boas.

Former Spurs captain William Gallas has hit out out former Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas, during an interview with French sports talk show SFR Sport, claiming that he was badly let down by the Portuguese during his time at White Hart Lane.

Villas-Boas, who is now in charge of Chinese club Shanghai SIPG, endured a torrid time at Spurs, and lasted just 17 months in his role as manager of the north London side.

And Gallas, who made 78 appearances for the Lilywhites, pulled no punches in his assessment of his former manager when speaking live of SFR Sport’s talk show, slamming Villas-Boas for the unfair treatment he gave him during his time at the club:

“He came in as coach. I was captain of Tottenham in the first half of the season, and I was unlucky to get injured. I came back, and I felt straight away that he had changed. He didn’t speak to me anymore, he didn’t ask for advice. In my head, I knew he had changed, but I didn’t say anything. What I don’t like about a coach is not having the courage to tell you, ‘I don’t need you any more.’ I told him, ‘Tell me if you don’t need me anymore. I can leave.’ He replied, ‘No, I need you.’ So I stayed, and I got screwed.”

The Frenchman eventually left Tottenham in the summer of 2013, and went on to join Australian outfit Perth Glory.

He was widely considered as one of the finest centre-backs of his generation, and arguably never reached the heights that his talent suggested he should have.

And after his latest comments, it is quite clear who he blames for the latter part of his career in England not being as productive as it should have been.
