The holding midfielder has been linked with a summer switch to West Ham United and he is just what they need.

West Ham United’s defence has looked porous for much of Slaven Bilic’s time at the club, and shipping seven goals in their first two matches this season has done nothing to change that thought.

A 4-0 defeat to a free-flowing Manchester United is one thing, but conceding three goals against Southampton just a week later – including a late winner after Javier Hernandez’s heroic double – shows just how shaky West Ham’s back line is despite the arrival of Jose Fonte and Pablo Zabaleta in the last two transfer windows.

According to the Mirror, West Ham are expecting their club-record offer for Sporting Lisbon’s William Carvalho to go right to the wire as the Portuguese club attempt to drum up a late bidding war, but if the Hammers get their man, he would instantly transform their defence despite operating further forward.

The 25-year-old has long been linked with a move to the Premier League, and it seems this summer could finally see that happen, with the Hammers looking to build on their already impressive window with the capture of the Portuguese international.

A player with the ability to shield West Ham’s back line week in, week out will allow the club’s fellow midfielders to push further forward and if he fulfils his potential, William could quickly become a fan favourite at the London Stadium.

He may take some time to settle in his new surroundings, and West Ham still need to get a deal over the line. However William has the potential to be what Nemanja Matic is for Manchester United.

In time he really could be that good, so it is no surprise Sporting are holding out for the best possible deal.
