William Carvalho’s rumoured move to West Ham United did not materialise in the transfer window and he is back playing a key role at Sporting Club de Portugal.

The Guardian reported in late August that West Ham were ‘confident’ of pulling off a deal for the midfielder, but no agreement could be struck.

There was a bitter war of words between the hierarchies at both clubs after the transfer window, but Carvalho has not let it affect his performances.

Carvalho provided an assist in Sporting’s 2-0 win over Tondela last week, and he was their most impressive performer once again as they drew against Moirenense this weekend.

Carvalo touched the ball more times than any other player on the pitch (97) and managed four shots at goal as he tried to lead his side to an away win.

His performances have been praised by his former coach Luis Goncalves.

He told Desporto Ao Minuto: “It is only natural that he wants to make the leap, just like any player at his level. As a professional William has to continue to contribute to the team when he is picked.

“The professionalism of a player can not be called into question by the fact that a transfer does not take place or because he is more often seated on the bench, the player has to be professional and William would never play badly because of it.

“He is well integrated, despite the failed transfer, and will continue to contribute to the team. Also coming is January…”.

Strong performances from Carvalho will continue to put him in the shop window for the next transfer window, but the bitter fall out will make West Ham’s chances of doing a deal very tough.

It is only a matter of time before he eventually lands his big move. West Ham fans will just have to hope he does not end up at one of their rivals instead.
