Wolverhampton Wanderers tried to re-sign Benik Afobe in January but his Premier League struggles should put them off this time around.
It looks as if nothing can stop Wolverhampton Wanderers right now. Though the prospect of an injury or a suspension to star striker Leo Bonatini should be in the back of Nuno Espirito Santo’s mind ahead of the January transfer window.
Beyond the in-form Brazilian, there are no other natural centre-forwards at Molineux – at least not one with plenty of first-team experience under their belt.
So with Wolves planning to spend again in January as they look to cruise to promotion, it appears that a new striker is right at the top of their wishlist. And with The Sun reporting that Bournemouth could cash in on former fans’ favourite Benik Afobe in January, it seems only a matter of time before speculation once again links the powerful hitman with a return to the Black Country.
The Cherries paid Wolves £12 million for Afobe two years ago but he has never really proven himself in the top flight. Following the arrival of Jermain Defoe and the return to fitness of Callum Wilson, the one-time Arsenal youngster has fallen down the pecking order at the Vitality Stadium.
Premier League quality?
The report states that Crystal Palace are willing to pay £15 million but Wolves, who had a bid rejected on deadline day per the Sun, could comfortably meet Bournemouth’s asking price.
Though with Wolves looking like a Premier League in everything but name, does it really make sense for them to renew their interest in January? Afobe has tallied 10 goals in 57 top flight games for Bournemouth so there’s little reason to believe he’d do much better wearing gold.
The Mirror (15th November, page 28) claimed that Wolves are eyeing a move for Feyenoord’s Nicolai Jorgensen – so perhaps they are now thinking bigger than Afobe.
