Manchester United striker James Wilson could leave on loan in January with Leeds United keen – but what of Wolverhampton Wanderers?

It’s over three years since James Wilson wrote his name into Manchester United folklore with a double on his debut against Hull City. United fans will have hoped that Wilson would have been leading the line for Jose Mourinho’s title chasing Red Devils right now but, while fellow academy graduate Marcus Rashford has gone from strength to strength, Wilson has failed to kick on.

After loan spells at Brighton and Derby, the 21-year-old finds himself turning out for Ricky Sbragia’s reserve side while recovering from a serious knee injury that brought a premature end to last season’s loan at Pride Park.

And, according to The Sun, Wilson could depart Old Trafford on a temporary basis again in January. The striker admitted that another loan is a ‘possibility’ and Championship duo Leeds United and Reading are keen.

Leeds could certainly do with a goalscorer to take the pressure of Pierre-Michel Lasogga with Thomas Christiansen’s side scoring once in a run of three straight defeats. And, despite the historic rivalry between the two Northern powerhouses, Man United have been more than happy to loan their talented youngsters to Leeds over the years.

Though you can imagine that there will be more than two clubs looking to bring Wilson to the Championship in the summer. Should Wolves be one of them?

Wolves on the hunt

Considering that Leo Bonatini is the league leader’s only senior centre-forward, it is certainly a possibility. Wolves need back-up for the Brazilian following the summer sales of Nouha Dicko and Jon Dadi Bodvarsson and Wilson could provide exactly that.

He’s a quick and instinctive goalscorer who could operate fluidly in tandem with Diogo Jota, Helder Costa and co. And with Wolves expected to pay £14 million to make Jota’s loan move from Atletico Madrid permanent in January, per The Mirror (page 46, 16th October), it makes sense to save money elsewhere.
