Wolves want a striker – so summer target Vincent Aboubakar’s fine goalscoring run at Porto will not have passed those at Molineux by.

We know Wolves’ Chinese owners have limitless ambition, and the money to back it up.

Chairman Jeff Shi told The Mirror last week that the Championship leaders ‘want the best’ – and are prepared to invest huge sums to make that happen. But with Financial Fair Play hovering in the background, they know they cannot afford to go overboard in the transfer market – even if they did break the Championship record when paying £15.8 million for Ruben Neves.

But with Wolves eyeing another striker to put the icing on an already talented squad, it remains to be seen how much they are willing to spend in January. Reports in The Sun (3rd December, page 65) that Derby County’s out-of-favour striker Chris Martin is their top priority seemed oddly underwhelming.

But, if they renew their interest in Porto talisman Vincent Aboubakar, no one could accuse Wolves’ owners of getting a little complacent.

According to Goal, Wolves were interested in signing the Cameroonian international in the summer after he fired Besiktas to the Super Lig title during a hugely impressive loan spell in Turkey.

But since returning to Portugal, Aboubakar has been in the form of his life. The 25-year-old has hit the net 12 times in 17 games for Sergio Conceicao’s side, thereby making Porto the favourites to wrestle the Primeira Liga title back form bitter rivals Benfica this season.

And understandably, Porto did not wait around to ensure there was no chance they could lose Aboubakar on the cheap. According to the BBC, they tied the striker down to a new four-year contract in October, complete with a £44 million release clause.

Porto would probably be willing to listen to offers around the £20 million mark, however, but it remains to be seen whether striker-hunting Wolves are willing to shatter their transfer record for the fourth straight transfer window.
