Rangers had hoped to sign both Louis Moult and Jamie Walker in the summer but would not meet the asking price demanded by Motherwell and Hearts.
It does little for the reputation of Scottish football that two of the league’s best and most in-demand players could be heading to England’s third tier in the January transfer window.
The Scottish Sun claims that League One leaders Wigan Athletic are hoping to lure prolific Motherwell striker Louis Moult, the league’s top scorer in 2017/18, to the DW Stadium in the New Year.
And if they get their way, Moult would be joined by highly-rated Hearts winger Jamie Walker.
The report claims that Wigan boss Paul Cook wants more firepower in his squad and believes he can get the attacking duo for a combined £1 million. Both Moult and Walker are out of contract next summer and may be available on a cut-price deal in January.
But an inspired and bargain double deal would not go down well with one of Scotland’s biggest clubs. Per the Scottish Sun, both Moult and Walker have been linked with Rangers for quite some time.
And the Glasgow giants did make approaches for both Moult and Walker in the summer, only to baulk at their hefty price-tags. But with their valuation declining as the contracts run down, surely January is the perfect time for Rangers to revisit their interest.
They know just how good Moult can be after all, the 25-year-old netting a clinical double against them in the Scottish League Cup semi-final this season. And they were desperate to land Walker, the Daily Record claiming they made three bids.
So Wigan can deal a huge blow to Rangers by landing not one but two of their long-standing targets for a pocket-change fee.
