Will West Ham United regret not going for Andre Gray over Javier Hernandez?

Javier Hernandez appears to be taking a while to fully settle in at West Ham United.

When Javier Hernandez arrived at West Ham United earlier this summer, there was an expectation that the Mexican could take Slaven Bilic’s side to the next level.

Hernandez has proven before that he can be a prolific scorer at Premier League level, and he arrived after an excellent season at Bayer Leverkusen last term.

However, things have not yet worked out as hoped for Hernandez at the London Stadium since his £16 million move, as valued by the London Evening Standard.

The 29-year-old has only found the back of the net in two of his first nine West Ham appearances, and he has certainly not established himself as Bilic’s leading striker.

Hernandez has been forced to play out wide and in a withdrawn role, with Bilic suggesting that he isn’t suited to pairing Andy Carroll up-front.

As a result, there may now be a question over whether West Ham would have been better off targeting Andre Gray.

The Hammers were heavily linked with the Burnley forward in the Daily Mail, but he ended up making a move to Watford.

Gray has impressed for the Hornets, and his skill set may have suited West Ham more than Hernandez’s.

While the former Manchester United man is undoubtedly a better finisher, Gray is arguably a better link-man.

Gray possesses more pace and power than Hernandez, and if a goalscorer wasn’t Bilic’s top priority, then there is a question to be asked over whether he picked the right man to buy in the summer.
