West Ham were favourites to sign Alfie Mawson but after having a bid rejected Wolves could now swoop in for the Swansea defender.

Wolverhampton Wanderers are considering a bid for Swansea City defender Alfie Mawson, according to the Daily Mail, as they look to strengthen their squad ahead of a return to the Premier League.

Improving the attack appears to be a priority for head coach Nuno Espirito Santo, but they want to make signings throughout the team including at the back.

Blow for West Ham

This probably won’t be greeted in a positive fashion at the London Stadium, with West Ham United previously being in pole position to land Mawson.

As the BBC reports, the Hammers have had a bid for the 24-year-old rejected already, with them unwilling to meet Swansea’s valuation of more than £20m.

West Ham have already signed goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski from the Swans following their relegation to the Championship, but could now miss out on former teammate Mawson.

How much the East Londoners originally offered for the centre-back is unknown, but how disappointed would they be if having been clear favourites to sign the Englishman they now miss out to Wolves?

Mawson impressed in a poor Swansea team last season, proving he is certainly Premier League quality, which is why clubs like West Ham and Wolves are reportedly keen to add the centre back to their squads.

However, West Ham have already signed Issa Diop from Toulouse in a club record £22m (BBC) deal this summer, so perhaps defence is no longer as much of a priority for new manager Manuel Pellegrini.

Despite the arrival of Diop though, Mawson joining a new divisional rival could turn out to be a bitter pill to swallow for West Ham if the English defender thrives while Pellegrini’s newest recruit struggles.
