Kevin Wimmer has completed his transfer from Tottenham to Stoke but will West Brom regret not completing the deal themselves?

Stoke City have completed the signing of Tottenham Hotspur defender Kevin Wimmer for a fee that the BBC has reported to be £18m.

This will come as a blow to West Bromwich Albion, who themselves had agreed a fee with Spurs for the centre-back – according to the Birmingham Mail – before he joined Stoke instead.

Crystal Palace were also interested in Wimmer, but it is the Baggies who made the first approach and who could perhaps regret missing out on the 24-year-old the most.

And the fact West Brom were the early favourites to sign the Austria international could be what makes it so galling should he prove to be a success at the Bet365 Stadium.

The Times reported that it was Tony Pulis’ desire to use Wimmer as a left-back as well as in central defence that saw the Austrian go “cold” over a switch to the Hawthorns.

Not only that, but the Birmingham Mail claimed that Pulis was also unsure about confirming the deal despite the club’s hierarchy giving it the go-ahead.

If Manchester City target Jonny Evans does leave then Liverpool’s Mamadou Sakho will be the man signed as a replacement, reports the Telegraph, and at £30m will cost almost double what was paid for Wimmer.
