The Everton defender was a mainstay of Neil Warnock’s side, when the Cardiff City manager was at Sheffield United.
Only a collapse as grave as the one Neil Warnock oversaw in his final season at Sheffield United will see Cardiff City miss out on promotion this season.
United’s relegation that campaign – 2006-07 – saw one of Warnock’s mainstays, Phil Jagielka, sold to Everton, where he remains to this day.
Now 35, Jagielka is about to enter the final year of his contract at Goodison Park and could well be replaced this summer, despite having experienced a resurgence over the past couple of matches.
While Cardiff are certainly not short in the England international’s favoured position – where Sean Morrison, Sol Bamba and Bruno Ecuele Manga have shared responsibilities this season – it would be no surprise to see Warnock target a reunion.
And Jagielka – who was handed senior debut by Warnock at Sheffield United 18 years ago – could well be tempted if so, having seen his impact wane at Everton.
That’s if Cardiff can get over the line in the coming few weeks.
