Will Vurnon Anita be used in midfield for Leeds United?

According to a report in the print edition of The Mirror on Sunday, Leeds United are chasing Wolverhampton Wanderers pair Matt Doherty and Danny Batth.

If Leeds are genuinely interested in Doherty, it might be a hint about what head coach Thomas Christiansen is planning for Vurnon Anita.

The Whites lost left-back Charlie Taylor to Burnley this week but their swift acquisition of the ex-Newcastle man – who impressed in that role last season – prompted suggestions that the 28-year-old would be deployed in a left-back position next term.

A journalist from The Sun, who broke the story about United’s interest in Anita, claimed that he would be “predominantly as a full-back” during the 2017-18 campaign.

Doherty has spent a lot of his career at right-back but he thrived in a left-back role for Wolves last season and if Leeds sign him then it would suggest that Anita will be used in a midfield role, given that is his natural position.

If that is the case then it would also suggest that Christiansen is planning to offload a central midfielder, with Liam Bridcutt, Mateusz Klich, Ronaldo Vieira, Eunan O’Kane and Kalvin Phillips all based there.

Asked by LUTV about his ideal position this week, Anita said: “I can play almost everywhere, but I’m a midfield player normally.

“I can play right-back or left-back. Where the coach needs me I will play, but normally it is midfield.”
