The Tottenham Hotspur player has reportedly turned down a big European club.
It looks like Tottenham Hotspur might be offloading Vincent Janssen, but not to a predictable team.
According to The Sun, the out-of-favour Tottenham striker is headed for China after it was made clear that Mauricio Pochettino has no plans for him, even with Harry Kane being injured for now.
But the report adds that the Netherlands international has rejected a move to Sevilla and, if true, it’s a baffling decision by Janssen.
He might not be good enough for Spurs any longer but this is a player who turns 25 in June, a player who is nowhere near his peak as of yet.
Being surplus to requirements under Pochettino doesn’t mean that Janssen – who scored 30 goals for AZ Alkmaar during the 2015-16 campaign – couldn’t still fashion a very decent career for himself in a top European league.
And turning down Sevilla, who were offering him the chance to do that, is simply bizarre.
He will presumably earn a lot more money in China, but it’s a short career. When Janssen retires, does he want to look back on it all and wonder if he should’ve stayed in Europe and continued playing at the highest level, even for less money?
It must be noted that he might encounter the same problems at Sevilla as he has done at Tottenham, because he wouldn’t play regularly, but competing with top strikers will do far more for his game than playing 90 minutes in the Chinese Super League every single week.
If Janssen – a £17 million addition in 2016 [The Mirror] – still wants a decent career then moving to Asia isn’t the smart choice.
