The Tottenham Hotspur target has agreed to join RB Leipzig this summer.
According to a report from Goal.com back in December, Tottenham Hotspur had made it known to representatives of Jean-Kevin Augustin that they wanted to sign him when he became a free agent in 2018. Unfortunately for Spurs, the 20-year-old has opted to swap Paris Saint-Germain for RB Leipzig this summer.
The attacker had just a year left on his PSG contract but has now signed a five-year deal with the Bundesliga club, leaving Tottenham to wonder if they should have made a move when they had the chance rather than waiting to sign a potential bargain for nothing 12 months later.
A centre forward who can also play out wide if required, Augustin is highly rated in France and would have given Tottenham additional fire-power just when they need it the most.
He is also at an age when he would have accepted not playing week in, week out, instead developing his game over a prolonged period of time.
He will now do that at Leipzig; however if Tottenham were genuinely interested it raises more questions about their summer transfer policy.
While the vast majority of Tottenham supporters rightly trust their manager Mauricio Pochettino and chairman Daniel Levy, they have had to watch as Everton make quality signing after quality signing, while North London rivals Arsenal have added Alexandre Lacazette to their ranks, Manchester City acted quickly to sign Bernardo Silva and Ederson, and Liverpool, Manchester United and Chelsea will also be busy in due course.
The same is likely to be the case with Tottenham. However, they have watched another promising target slip away.
According to ESPN, Leipzig payed £11.4million for the 20-year-old, and while Tottenham may have been holding out for a bargain deal the following summer, that was not to be.
