Former Tottenham Hotspur target Wissam Ben Yedder might have exposed a big Spurs mistake last night.
You could forgive Tottenham Hotspur pair Mauricio Pochettino and Daniel Levy if they winced over the sight of Wissam Ben Yedder destroying Manchester United last night.
The French attacker scored twice at Old Trafford to send Sevilla into the last eight of the Champions League and dump Jose Mourinho’s side out of the competition in the process.
But Red Devils fans won’t be the only ones feeling the pain this morning – Tottenham supporters might be too, albeit for a different reason.
According to a report in The Evening Standard in Janaury 2016, the 27-year-old was on Pochettino’s radar, and Get French Football reported the following summer that Bin Yedder – then at Toulouse – would have been available for as little as £8.8 million.
That figure looks to be accurate after ESPN reported that he joined the Spanish side for a similar amount a few weeks later and it has to go down as a regret for Pochettino and Levy.
Not only did the Lilywhites not sign Bin Yedder – who has 17 goals in 23 starts for the Rojiblancos this season – but they spent about £30 million on Vincent Janssen and Fernando Llorente over the following 12 months, neither of whom has proven an adequate plan-b option to Harry Kane.
Spurs get a lot of transfer deals spot-on, but this might be one that will irk the North Londoners.
