Would Tottenham Hotspur struggle without Harry Kane?

Harry Kane was injured in Tottenham Hotspur’s Premier League game on Sunday.

Those watching the Super Sunday clash between Tottenham Hotspur and Sunderland on television may well have winced when Harry Kane planted his ankle into the White Hart Lane turf and was forced out of the game on a stretcher.

It will be Spurs supporters wincing the most when Kane undergoes a scan to revel the damage he suffered during yesterday’s game.

The biggest criticism of Tottenham over the last couple of seasons has been their inability to bring in adequate forward cover for Kane should the worst happen.

While the true extent of Kane’s injury has yet to be revealed, you would assume that it will be a few weeks before the England International takes to the field, bar a miraculous recovery.

Despite a string of woeful displays at the European Championships and a slow start to the season, Kane is Spurs’ primary source of goals.

With the Englishman, Tottenham lack a striker who has a proven record of finding the net in the Premier League.

Tottenham have two alternatives should Kane miss a lengthy period – Vincent Janssen and Son Heung-min.

Janssen was signed in the summer after an impressive season in the Eredivisie with AZ Alkmaar, finding the net 27 times in 34 outings.

While it would be harsh to assess Janssen after just three appearances in a Spurs shirt, the Netherlands international is still adjusting to the pace of the Premier League and has failed to score so far.

Janssen’s Tottenham teammate Son has started the brighter of the pair, having signed for Spurs a year prior to the Dutchman.

Son has already netted twice in one appearance during a four-goal rout of Stoke City, a far more encouraging sign that his goal to game ratio will improve after scoring just four goals in 28 games last season.

Should Kane face a spell on the sidelines, both Janssen and Son have an opportunity to prove that Spurs have in fact got goalscoring options otherwise.

Since breaking into the Tottenham first team, Kane has been an ever-present figure, with his availability under question Spurs now face a real challenge in maintaining a goal threat.

Janssen and Son haven’t got the same impact or ability as Kane, and without their leading goal-scorer, Spurs will no doubt struggle with competing in the League, Champions League and domestic cup competitions.
