Should Tottenham Hotspur have moved for the 23-year-old before Everton?
The Sun reported way back in March that Tottenham Hotspur were interested in Jordan Pickford. After Hugo Lloris’s gaffe on Sunday, will Tottenham regret not challenging Everton for the 23-year-old?
Spurs looked on course to win a hard-fought point against Premier League champions Chelsea in their first game at Wembley this season, but Marcos Alonso found the winner on 88 minutes with a shot that Lloris could and definitely should have saved.
The France international has rescued the Lilywhites far more often than he has cost them, the former Lyon keeper proving to be a brilliant signing, but Sunday’s error was merely the latest in an expanding series of mistakes for club and country over the past eight months.
It is something of a worry from a Tottenham perspective and some fans might wonder whether Mauricio Pochettino should’ve acted on their reported interest and rivalled Ronald Koeman for the £30 million star.
Pickford joined Everton from Sunderland in a big-money switch back in June, becoming the third-most expensive keeper of all time, and if he develops the way he is expected to then the Toffees have a fine player on their hands.
Long term, he looks like he might be an outstanding player and Pochettino could’ve done with him as Lloris slowly but surely grows more unreliable.
The Frenchman no longer inspires complete confidence and, worryingly, the Argentine boss doesn’t have great options in reserve if Lloris doesn’t stem the tide of errors.
The 30-year-old remains an excellent goalkeeper, but now there’s a risk that he could hold Tottenham back instead of helping them get to where they want to be.
He has already cost them two points and few would be surprised if that figure increases as the season goes on.
