Tottenham and England man Eric Dier has struggled for form for both club and country over the past 12 months, and it is still unclear as to where his best position actually is.

Spurs fans have been highly critical of the 24-year-old recently, after a succession of lacklustre displays, and many are calling for him to be dropped by Mauricio Pochettino.

According to a report from the Guardian, Manchester United were prepared to pay £50 million for Dier in the summer of 2017, and with that in mind, will Tottenham now be regretting not cashing in on the England international?

Whilst the transfer market has undoubtedly been blown out of all proportion since Neymar joined Paris Saint-Germain for £198 million 13 months ago, £50 million for a player with Dier’s limited aptitude would surely have represented a great deal for Spurs.

The 24-year-old possesses a limited array of passing, and he is fairly ineffectual in the final third.

He does provide the Tottenham defence with a certain level of cover, however, and does a lot of the unfashionable things well.

That doesn’t mean that Dier could not have been replaced by someone of a higher standard, however, especially for the reported amount that United were prepared to pay the north London outfit.

The Englishman is still a Spurs player nevertheless, but the Lilywhtes will surely be regretting the fact that they did not cash in on him 12 months ago.
