Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly long-term admirers of the Barcelona midfielder.
Mauricio Pochettino has a lot of work to do at Tottenham this summer, if he is to guide his side to their first major trophy since 2008 next season.
One particular area of concern for the Argentine will be his central midfield department, with Mousa Dembele’s future in north London far from certain.
Spurs were interested in signing Benfica ace Bryan Cristante, according to the Mirror, but Italian media outlet Calcio Mercato claims that he is now on the verge of joining Roma.
With this in mind, Tottenham will obviously have to switch targets, and they should intensify their interest in Barcelona outcast Andre Gomes.
The Mirror reported last month that the Lilywhites were keen on bringing the Portugal international to north London, but rumours regarding the Barca star’s switch to Spurs have gone quiet of late.
Gomes joined Barcelona from Valencia in the summer of 2016, for a fee that could eventually rise to £46 million, according to BBC Sport, but he has failed to establish himself at the Camp Nou.
His failure to win over the Barca fans could be attributed to the fierce competition for places at the La Liga club, though, and he still has a lot to offer at the very highest level.
The 24-year-old possesses a wonderful range of passing, and his football intelligence enables him to dictate the tempo of the game from the middle of the park.
Much will depend on whether Dembele leaves at Tottenham this summer, but even if the Belgian does stay in north London, the addition of his long-term successor will be an absolute must, and Spurs could do a lot worse than Gomes.
