Will Sunderland be awarded the League Cup after Manchester City were charged? Many have been asking after the Premier League‘s decision.
The Black Cats suffered a 3-1 defeat to the Citizens at Wembley back in March 2014, as an early strike from Fabio Borini was cancelled out by goals from Yaya Toure, Samir Nasri and Jesus Navas.
However, after a four-year investigation into financial rule breaches from the Premier League led to a charge for Manchester City on Monday, some Sunderland fans have wondered if their side will retrospectively be awarded the trophy.
So, will Sunderland be awarded the League Cup? Let’s take a look at what past incidents of a similar nature suggest will happen…
Will Sunderland be awarded the League Cup?
Well, it seems as if it could be possible, based on what happened with Juventus, AC Milan and Inter Milan following the famous Calciopoli scandal.
Juventus were stripped of their 2005/06 Serie A title after it was discovered they had been involved in the match fixing scandal, which saw five Italians teams penalised for attempting to influence results by picking certain referees.
AC Milan finished second, although the fact they were also involved in the scandal saw Inter Milan named champions, despite finishing 15 points behind the Old Lady.
Therefore, it is highly possible that Sunderland are awarded the 2013/14 League Cup – known as the Capital One Cup at the time – if the Citizens are found guilty.
Manchester City have been charged for alleged rule breaches between 2009 and 2018, so their 2014 League Cup win over Sunderland would fall into the time period where they were seemingly involved in wrongdoing.

In an official statement, Manchester City have claimed to be “surprised” by the Premier League’s charge, and they “look forward” to the matter being put to rest.
Evidently, the Citizens are confident they followed the rules, but given the fact the Premier League have been investigating this situation across four years, they must also have confidence in their accusations.
Be sure to keep an eye on this situation, as Sunderland’s trophy cabinet could soon grow if Manchester City are found guilty of what would be the biggest financial scandal in English football history.
