The bookies seem to suggest that Glasgow Rangers bringing Steven Gerrard to Ibrox may not be out of the question.
There is a long way to go before Rangers appoint a new manager – if they decide not to renew Graeme Murty’s contract at the end of the season – but the Gers fans would certainly be forgiven for keeping a keen eye on the betting markets in case they provide any clues regarding who their manager next season will be.
Interestingly, there was a new name amongst the contenders on Monday, with Bet Victor listing Steven Gerrard as a 7/1 outsider to get the job during the summer.
Gerrard is, of course, one of the greatest players the Premier League has seen, clinching the Champions League trophy in 2005 and making more than 100 appearances for his country before retiring from playing in 2016. However, his reputation as a coach is developing with Gerrard currently enjoying his first role in the dugout with Liverpool’s under-18s.
Given that he is a huge name with little experience, it seems likely that he may divide opinion amongst the Rangers fans, with some hoping that the odds drop further while others may wish that there is absolutely nothing in the price.
But perhaps, there will be one player in the Rangers squad who may be hoping that Gerrard ends up at Ibrox at the end of the season given that his Gers career may be in desperate need of some inspiration as he has made just 10 appearances in all competitions across two seasons for the club.
Jordan Rossiter moved to Ibrox from Liverpool in 2016 but has never quite been able to vindicate Mark Warburton’s decision to bring him to the club with injuries plaguing a midfielder who has the talent and potential to be a key man for the Light Blues in the future.
He needs to prove that he can stay fit for prolonged periods, but if he can, Gerrard may perhaps be the kind of manager who could get the best out of him and help him finally realise that potential.
He will know all about Rossiter given that he was breaking into the first-team at Anfield during Gerrard’s last year at the club. And given their backgrounds, there have been comparisons between the pair, with Robbie Fowler making perhaps the most famous statement back in 2013 when the 21-year-old was in the academy side.
There is surely no better player for Rossiter to learn from than Gerrard, so perhaps appointing the latter in the summer – if there is anything at all in the odds – may be exactly what the youngster needs to get his Ibrox career on track.
