Glasgow Rangers had hoped to bring Youssouf Mulumbu to Ibrox, while their rivals were also reportedly keen.

Mulumbu caught the eye of the Old Firm after a string of stunning performances in Kilmarnock’s midfield this past season, and the appeal of landing him this summer increased given that he only signed a short-term deal at Rugby Park and thus, Rangers and Celtic could potentially land him for nothing in this window.

Mulumbu may perhaps end up joining one of Rangers or Celtic still, or it may turn out that the Old Firm pair may have never actually had enough of an interest to put a contract in front of him anyway, but perhaps it may be fair to suggest that either could now be left to rue not acting sooner as a switch to the Premier League must be tempting for the former West Brom and Norwich ace.

Neither Steven Gerrard or Brendan Rodgers should be able to argue that their squads would not be improved by signing Mulumbu if he is able to replicate the form that he showed this past season.
Rangers have done some tremendous business so far this summer, but they could arguably still do with signing a central midfielder who has that presence that they desperately needed at times this past term, particularly when they came up against Scott Brown.
Celtic meanwhile, suffered just four domestic defeats this past season and one of those came when they faced Killie and Mulumbu put in a stunning performance in the middle of the park on that occasion.
He may not be a regular starter if he moved to Parkhead, but both Celtic and Rangers fans would be forgiven for questioning why they missed out if something comes from the latest reports and he ends up moving to the Premier League this summer.
