It looks like Newcastle United are about to sell Chancel Mbemba, but will Rafael Benitez regret it in a few years?

Newcastle United fans on Twitter expressed their disappointment with a rumour about Chancel Mbemba on Tuesday.

The 23-year-old defender is reportedly set to sign a four-year deal with Anderlecht [Voetbalkrant] after falling out of favour under Rafael Benitez in the second half of last season.

Despite not playing since January, Mbemba remains a popular figure among Newcastle supporters and you wonder whether Benitez could be making a very big mistake.

The reason why the Congolese centre-back is popular among Magpies fans is because, well, he has shown more than enough signs during his three-year stint on Tyneside that he can be a very good player.

At 23, Mbemba, bought for £8 million in 2015, could very easily return to Anderlecht and go on to attract a bigger club than Newcastle if he finds form in Belgium over the coming years.

It wouldn’t be a great look for the Spanish manager if he sold the young stalwart for a few million this summer and Mbemba wound up being bought for a significant eight-figure sum down the line which, given the modern market and his potential, isn’t unlikely at all.

United fans have no reason not to trust Benitez, who led Newcastle to a 10th-placed finish on their return to the Premier League last season, but selling Mbemba should be questioned if and when he leaves St James’s Park.
