Speaking on the Que Golazo Podcast, Fabrizio Romano has been discussing the race for Lisandro Martinez’s signature as both Arsenal and Manchester United circle the defender.

The Argentine has been the subject of so much speculation this summer. Both United and Arsenal have bid for the centre-back, but, as of yet, Ajax are refusing to buckle.

Unfortunately for the Eredivisie giants, Martinez seemingly has his heart set on a move to the Premier League, and according to Romano, the defender will once again try to push for an exit this week after previously submitting a transfer request.

What’s been said?

Romano spoke about Martinez’s situation.

“Ajax’s position is very clear, they don’t want to sell him and they hope to keep him, but it’s true that the player is pushing. He wants to play Premier League football, he wants this experience, he’s really tempted by Manchester United. With Arsenal, they are not giving up yet, but Manchester United are leading the race,” Romano said.

“The player will push again (to leave), he feels he’s doing great with Ajax, but when a big club like Manchester United or Arsenal come calling you want to go as soon as possible, so that’s why Lisandro is pushing. This week will be important because Lisandro will again speak with the club and try to come to a solution.”

Delaying the inevitable

Ajax really don’t want to let Martinez go this summer, but there is a feeling that they’re just delaying the inevitable at this point.

If a player is desperate to leave, they often get their wish one way or another, and if Ajax don’t let him go, this could get somewhat ugly.

The Dutch champions should bid their defender a fond farewell and allow him to fulfil his dreams of playing in the Premier League.

Whether it’s Arsenal or United, it wouldn’t surprise us one bit if Martinez is playing in the English top-flight next term.
