Blackburn Rovers fans could face being stuck with Steve Kean, simply because the Venkys have made the position so unattractive.
Monday night’s relegation at Ewood Park came as no surprise to those who have watched Blackburn all season.
Rovers have picked up just one point out of a possible 12 against relegation rivals Bolton and Wigan this season, which in effect tells its own story.
Now as attention turns to next season, this season’s failure and figure of scorn, manager Steve Kean has risked more ire from the club’s supporters by announcing he does not intend to leave.
Even if the Venky’s decided to axe him and bring in a new manager, would the problem really change?
No of course not, for they the Venky’s are the problem; Kean is just their figurehead.
Surely fan protests are set to continue, so unhappy and disenfranchised are they with the Indian owners.
Do supporters genuinely believe the owners are willing to put up the required finances to lift them out of the Championship? Again, no they do not.
Managing a club like Rovers should be an attraction to managers, but with the private and still somewhat mysterious Venky’s as owners, it looks to be a poisoned chalice.
Portsmouth, a club in even worse dire straits than Blackburn, have proved that no matter what the devastating ownership backdrop, there will always be someone willing to step up, whether an ex-player, a caretaker, or a ‘firefighter’ manager with experience at similar clubs like Paul Hart.
Right now it looks like they might just be stuck with Steve Kean again, a man with no experience of managing in the football league.
It looks bleak for Rovers, and if Kean is axed, Rovers will have to put together one heck of a job advertisement to sell the role to prospective new bosses, for a role which should quite simply sell itself.
