Promising Leeds United midfielder has left the club on loan.

Leeds United midfielder Oriol Rey has left the club to join UB Conquense on loan in Spain.

It is an underwhelming resolution to Rey’s second season at Leeds, after he starred for the under-23s following his switch from Barcelona a year ago.

Rey signed a two-year contract extension with Leeds in May, meaning the Whites could receive a fee for him next summer if they decide he has no part to play.

What is disappointing concerning Rey is that he has gone back to Spain, and is not gaining experience playing in England.

Rey needed to continue to adjust to the culture in England, having left Spain a year ago, and instead he is heading home, making it more unlikely he will want to stick around at Leeds.

Playing for a League One or League Two club would have prepared Rey better for a push to play for Leeds next season.

Last season two players went out on loan to the Spanish second division, Yosuke Ideguchi and Ouasim Bouy, and neither have gone onto play a part this year either, being loaned to clubs in Germany and Holland.

Instead of looking like the logical step towards Leeds’ first team, Rey’s loan looks more like the stepping stone to a departure, and there are serious questions whether he will ever don a Whites shirt again.
